Google made clear that AI is now the entry point to search, not a side feature. The new box expands as you type, suggests how to frame your question, and reads many input types at once.
Built answers, not just links
Google is rolling out generative interfaces, where search builds custom layouts, trackers, and small dashboards on the fly. For a growing share of queries, people get a built answer rather than a list to click.
What to do about it
Stop optimizing only for blue links. Your content needs to be clear, well structured, and useful at a level a machine can summarize confidently. The brands getting cited in AI Mode have depth and clean structure. Marketers on X keep posting screenshots of which sources AI Mode quotes, and thin keyword-variation content is simply not in them.
